Subject: LED Procedure
Dear Dr. Schiffer,
I can not thank you enough for the amazing results I have experienced since the LED & IDET procedures. Please share my story with anyone that you think may benefit. I'd be happy to speak to anyone who is having doubts or difficulties deciding and to tell them to do this! My only regret throughout all of this is that I waited so long to come see you.
Here's my history and experience:
At age 13 I began to experience low back pain. Over the years, the pain increased
and eventually I began having numbness in both feet frequently. At age 16 I
was diagnosed with 2 herniated discs at levels L4-5 & L5-S1 and 1 bulging
disc at level L3-4. I tried physical therapy, bed rest with steroid treatment,
and chiropractic care. After consulting with several doctors, they all suggested
that I have surgery to remove the 2 discs and fusion.
At 17, this was not
an option for me. My grandmother happened to see you on a television special
discussing an alternative surgery - percutaneous discectomy. I opted for that
alternative in December of 1988. Although at that time the procedure was still
considered experimental, we knew it was the best option for me.
I had a 2 level percutaneous discectomy with the hope that the bulging disc would heal. I was pain free for 10 years as a result and that 3rd disc has never bothered me. What a wonderful option.
2 years ago I began to experience lower back pain once again. And again it increased over time until I had the numbness in my feet. I immediately did some research to see if you were still performing the non-invasive discectomy procedure.
I already knew what other doctors would tell me do, and I didn't want fusion. I was thrilled to find that not only were you still performing the procedure but that the secondary IDET procedure gave me new hope of not having a recurrence.
Within 1 month, I had seen you again for consultation and been diagnosed - again L4-5 & L5-S1 were causing problems; 1 herniation and 1 tear. We discussed the procedure and all of the advances that have been made in 12 years.
On August 2, 2000 I had a 2 level discectomy & IDET. The whole procedure
was so much easier than I anticipated. I experienced very little pain, only
for a few seconds when I woke up a bit. Other than that I have no memory at
all of the procedure. It was all done within 1-½ hours. My back pain
was gone immediately - I was amazed. I could tell right away that my original
complaints had disappeared and that I my discomfort was
muscular. I walked out of the surgery center and tolerated the ride home quite well. I took the pain meds for 1 week and needed them the next week only every few days.
I began working from my home after 2 weeks and returned to the office after 3 weeks. I am now just under 13 weeks post-op and I feel great. I have no pain in my back and no numbness in my feet. I only experience minor pain when I sit too long or overdo it which I am confident will subside once I'm fully recovered. I haven't felt this good in years and am so thankful for your expertise.
