Dear Doctor Schiffer:
There are few people who have had a profound impact in my life;
my father, my mother, my wife, my two sons, and Dr. Schiffer. I
find it strange that someone I met just four months ago, someone
I don't intimately know personally, has had such an enormous affect
on my life.
Four months ago I was at the end of my rope. I had severe sciatica
in my left leg, which was causing so much misery my life would have
been better off without my leg. I had exhausted virtually all forms
of treatment for this type of pain when my chiropractor scheduled
an MRI.
Reviewing the MRI films confirmed my chiropractor's suspicions;
I had a herniated disk between L5 and my sacrum. The herniation
was crushing a major nerve leading to my left leg. He recommended
I look into surgery.
The thought of surgery was very frightening. I'd never had surgery.
I was afraid, sad, angry, and generally very negative about the
whole situation. Consulting other surgeons only increased my anxiety.
How can removing bone (the facet joint) be any good? "You're not
drilling in my back bones with that Black and Decker, NO WAY!!"
I was even more scared after the initial consultations. I started
to lose hope. Then, my chiropractor pointed me in Dr. Schiffer's
direction.
I walked into Dr. Schiffer's office (which was a chore by this
time, the leg pain was so bad) skeptical, angry, scared and sad.
His demeanor was incredible, especially considering my attitude.
Dr. Schiffer determined he could help me, so we went into his office
to discuss surgery. I was (or I thought I was) prepared. I had a
list of questions and my God, I was going to get through them. Dr.
Schiffer sensed my anxiety and did something IÕll never forget;
he stood up, came around his desk, sat in front of me, put his hands
on my shoulders, and said, "Don't worry. EverythingÕs going to be
just fine. We'll take care of you." I almost burst out in tears.
Not only is he a brilliant surgeon, he must also have a degree in
psychology as well. He "got" that I was scared and was able to gain
my full trust within just a few minutes. We scheduled the surgery
and I went home confident for the first time in months.
The surgery went really well. It was totally painless (okay, I'm
afraid of needles, so drawing blood was the most difficult part
for me). I was very emotional in the recovery room. For the first
time in months there was no pain in my leg. The folks at the Black
Hawk Surgery Center were incredible. I had the surgery in the morning
and went home the same day. I even walked from the car to my bed
that afternoon. Dr. Schiffer performed flawlessly; the more I spoke
to him the more confident I became in my decision to choose him.
Recovery went well. I spent some time in bed and taking it really
easy. Physical therapy has helped also. I'm now totally cured. Every
day I wake up realizing how lucky I am to have met Dr. Schiffer.
He changed my life, for the better. My 3-1/2 year old son even knows
who Dr. Schiffer is and is also thankful. People at work comment
about how happy (both physically and mentally) I look.
Overall, I am 100% happy with my decision to have Dr. Schiffer
work his magic on my back. I am no longer in pain and my back is
in great shape again. I am back to my normal self, which I had not
been in almost a year.
